Summer Safety Tips
Summer has to be the best season of the year. It’s when everyone brings out the water slides, barbecues, and ice cream (yum!). But all that fun under the sun can come with a list of health risks. For example, more people are vulnerable to heat strokes and drowning during summer. So, does this mean you can’t enjoy the warmer months? Of course not! You’ve just got to be smart about it, and that’s where the tips below come in.
Pool Safety
When you think about summer, swimming pools come to mind. While they’re a place to cool off, it’s also where most drownings occur. Most of these drownings can be prevented by always wearing a life jacket and never swimming alone.
When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors
When you hear thunder, it’s time to get indoors. Thunder means that you’re close enough to be struck by lightning. Wait 30 minutes after the storm has ended before going back outside.
Sun Safety
Get no more than 5-10 minutes of direct sunlight. Too much sun causes skin cancers and sunburns. So stay in the shade or have sunscreen on hand. You can also wear sun-protective clothing.
Stay Hydrated
The body can lose a lot of water by sweating. If not replenished with fluids, you can get dehydrated. Dehydration leads to fatigue, constipation, and even fainting.
Stay Cool
Heat stress can cause anything from nausea to seizures and heat stroke, which can be fatal. Wear light clothing and drink enough water. These both help to regulate body temperature.
